Genre ListsThis is a featured page

Genre Fiction is often written to appeal to readers already familiar with other works of fiction in that genre. Books within a genre will share similar expected elements and appeal characteristics such as:

Style of writing
Setting
Audience

These are often considered the genre conventions: "the specific settings, roles, events, and values that define an individual genre and its subgenres" McKee, Robert (1997). Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting. New York: HarperCollins.

The list of genres appears to be increasing as new genres and sub-genres develop. There are a core set of genres, from which a range of sub-genres emanate.
They include:-
  • Romance
  • Westerns
  • Mystery
  • Horror
  • Science Fiction
  • Fantasy
  • Thriller

Over time a number of additional genres and sub-genres have developed:-
  • Christian Fiction
  • Gothic (Gothic Romance; Gothic Horror)
  • Action-adventure
  • History
  • True life
  • Graphic novel
  • Paranormal
  • Medieval

And many many more are on the way!

According to Lovereading.co.uk, there is a growing demand for these books typified by true stories of personal tragedy.

I'll kick off with Angela's Ashes - Frank McCourt
Running with scissors - Augusten Burroughs
